Connected Courts
An IoT device to quantify usage of public play spaces, helping councils make informed decisions.
AKQA developed the device in collaboration with Nothing But Net—a not for profit organisation dedicated to maintaining and incentivising the use of public basketball courts.
Currently local councils are unable to validate how public play spaces are utilised. Conducting site visits, surveying them for brief periods: the data remains radically inadequate.
Now councils have a low cost solar powered device that gives a realtime and historical view of court usage.
This trial only tracks basketball activity but there remains scope to explore different uses of the space.
The system has just been deployed at it’s first trial location in Melbourne and the project remains a work in progress.
