Somesthetic Transfer
Capture, digitally process, then re-physicalise the sensory experience of an artwork into a new artwork with a different subject.
An AKQA and Google collaboration. The team used standard cartographic photogrammetry techniques to digitise the texture and colour of an oil painting. Resulting in four dimensions of data RGB and depth to train a neural net.
The resulting neural model takes both the style and texture of an artwork and applies it to another image to be 3D printed with a high definition UV printer.
Unlike screens, painted art has an emotive visceral presence, it’s tactile, responding to the space and viewer as they move around it. Present day AI and robotics is capable of deconstructing and restructuring human artefacts in new ways. From games like Alpha Go, to art, AI is our new collaborator. Assisting us to create with the deft hand of a master entirely new works and approaches.
These works represent the first in a series that seeks to explore new aesthetics.
