Stereoscopic Internal Projection Apparatus
Project content into the darkness behind the closed eyelid.
Although this is actually very difficult to do I wanted to create an object/process that would be convincing enough for people to imagine what the experience might be like – in that same context behind the eyes – the mind.
We experience so many things each day through imagining what it would be like to actually experience them, (read new tech, photographs of places, videos of moments) I wanted to create a work that plays off this everyday experience and context.
Six artists were commissioned to create content for the apparatus. Each artist had custom lenses made in order to experience each of the six works at a once off event on November 1st, 2014.
Using customised +20 diopter contact lenses placed onto the eyes the artist was able to focus as close to the back of the closed eyelid as possible. Twin ultra high contrast 15 lumen laser pico projectors project an 848 x 480px one inch HD image over each eyelid.
By commissioning and curating work for SIPA, the dark behind the eyes was established as an exhibition context.
